Originally, this story was to be kind of a "filler" story between the rather heavy Wrath of the Zylons (199) and the finale, Zylon Homeworld (2??). The budget even reflected that -- 3 episodes.
As I was writing it, however, everything seemed to balloon. Admittedly, that happens with a lot of my stories. Wrath of the Zylons (199) was only supposed to be 4 episodes.
There were three different stories going on. The attack, the society, and Kim-Ly. So I was writing the first bit, moving the last part along, and then ran into the society which turned into more than I had planned. Or at least what I had thought it would be.
It didn't help that I completely blew the budget when it came to the number of characters. We're always told to control the number of characters in a story. Don't make small roles. That sort of thing. Truly, I wasn't watching what I was doing and was just throwing characters out there. I think it ended up with twenty speaking roles or something like that.
By the time I got to the last Act -- where I was supposed to start setting up the society -- the producer told me there was no more budget. How can I create a society with no money, no characters? So I really had to pare down that part of the story. I mean, we're talking 1970's, end-of-season, we're out of money, Doctor Who.
Well, there was some give and take on both my part and the production's part, and I got what I got. Not everything I wanted but something. And I think it does a good job bringing across what I wanted, even if the lack of budget does show through a bit during that part. But hey, that's just a writer bellyaching that I didn't get Indiana Jones' level of money for the story.
Still, you get some nice battles, and I was happy that a Star Bird appears again, even though we don't get to go on it. Maybe next time. There are some things a Star Bird can do that hasn't been done in the show yet...
I can say that I was really glad that Amber Rack agreed to reprise her role as Captain Bergin. She really nailed the role in her last appearance. So I wanted to expand her character a bit. There's a lovely human moment in there before she puts on her hard warrior shell again.
My one biggest regret was killing off Dannette Vassar's character in Wrath of the Zylons (199). She is a born Star Cruiser commander, and I really wish I could have used her again.
Alexi Thrint almost made the cut in this story, but alas I had to remove his character due to potential scheduling conflicts. So he is there but not there.
Yes, this is the penultimate adventure for the Star Cruisers. I always knew I was going to end it. Can't keep doing it forever. But I am glad to give Arthur Vassar a good Zylon story.
